footballs so we played them. They won but we were on their two-yard line when the game ended.
Our Jasper athletic program was built on the $70 we got from Valdosta.”
Alphonso Levy
Alphonso Levy took time from his busy schedule to drop in on our Happy Birthday party at
the class for visually impaired adults. Levy, Lake City’s Mr. Music Man, delighted the class with
a medley of piano numbers, then led them in a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday to teacher Gloria
Gram. Levy then brought the house down when he jokingly serenaded Gloria with “The Old Gray
Mare, She Ain’t What She Used To Be!”
Bo Hendrick
Bo Hendrick has been the radio analyst for CHS football for 22 years. We were discussing
the overtime win at Lake Weir and Bo knew without hesitation that the Tigers’ last overtime game
was a victory over Sarasota Riverview under Coach Bob Simmons.
Gen. Bob Harkness
Gen. Bob Harkness wanted me to tell everyone how much he enjoyed and appreciated being
honored at the pre-game ceremony at the Valdosta game. He said that, even at the age of 91, he
thoroughly enjoyed being surrounded by all the lovely CHS cheerleaders. A few days after we
talked, Bob took a spell of bad health and had to check into the Lake City Medical ICU. I visited
him there just long enough to tell him we loved him and expected him to get back on his feet in time
for Homecoming. He winked and gave his famously firm handshake so we know we can count on
him to do his best to be there.
