Some Stuff I Wrote (2001) H. Morris Williams
Perry Moss, his CFL coach, once said that Jack would have been one of the all-time greats
in the CFL except for injury problems. Two weeks ago on the Bobby Bowden Show, Burt Reynolds
name Jack Espenship to his all-time FSU backfield.
Kelly Lowery, a gutsy and exciting QB for our Tigers and later the FSU Seminoles, went
on to play QB for the Orlando Thunderbirds of the USFL.
Speedy, sure-handed Tim Hartley played the receiver position for the Jacksonville Bulls
of the USFL.
Shayne Edge, Gator punter, will likely be the next Lake City product to play in the NFL.
Last year Shayne’s punting average was 43.4 yard per game and, during that same time, Reggie Roby
of the Miami Dolphins led the NFL with 45.7, so Shayne’s chances look good.
Back to baseball, keep an eye on young Brett Adams over at Flagler College. Brett plays
first base and catcher. A flawless fielder, he bats around.300 and can hit the curve ball. Brett is
highly coachable and dedicated. He is a major league young man on and off the playing field.
Remember his name. He might someday be on this select list.
When CHS Played Cuba
November 24,1992
The Athletico de Cuba defeated the CHS football team 27-0 at Almendares Park in Havana
before 15,00 fans who paid $10 each on New Year’s Day, 1921.
Here’s how it all came about.
The Cuban Athletic Club had a football team and they wanted to play the best team in the
Southeastern USA. CHS had had a good season so Cuba invited them to come to Havana on an all-
expenses-paid trip and CHS accepted.
The CHS group - 14 players, three adults and one student manager - headed for Cuba aboard
the palatial steamer “Governor Cobb,” arriving December 31,1920. They were welcomed royally,
beyond their wildest dreams. That very night - New Year’s Eve - a huge banquet was held to honor
the Lake City visitors.
