                                      Former Heads of the PTA

                                                      October 4,1994



                     OUR  GLORIOUS  PTAs...  The  Parent-Teacher  Association  -  The  PTA!  Do  you  have  any

                idea  how  valuable  they  have  been  to  our  schools?  Read  this  list  of  early  PTA  presidents  and  some
                of their accomplishments, and you will  see the glorious  good they and their memberships did for our

                kids.
                     MRS.  FRANK  IVES  (1921-23,1925-26)  ...  She  organized  the  first  local  PTA,  was  its  first

                president,  and  served  five  years.  Emphasized  campus  beautification  —  got  the  city  of  Lake  City  to
                donate  $700  for  shrubbery, grass,  sidewalks  and  curbing.  She  also  sponsored  a  fish  fry to  buy purple

                and gold blankets for the CHS football team.
                     MRS. HUGH WILSON (1924)________  She emphasized recreation and sponsored a fish fry
               to  buy  playground  equipment.  She  organized  local  doctors  and  citizens  to  correct  school  sewage

               and plumbing problems.

                     MRS.  E.  A.  McCOLSKEY  (1927-31)  ...  She  served  five  years.  She  raised  $200  to  buy
               milk  and  library  books.  Started  a  milk  fund  to  provide  free  milk  to  needy  students  in  primary
               grades.  Reorganized  school  clinics  to  improve  health  services  for  preschool  and  primary  grade  kids.

               Furnished  a  restroom  for  teachers.  Bought  window  shades  for  the  entire  school  and  a  piano  for  the
               auditorium. Got the local PTA officially chartered.

                     MRS  HARRY  EDWARDS  (1932-33)  .  .  .  She  started  the  PTA  lunchroom,  a  major
               undertaking  to  provide  free  lunches  for  needy  kids.  Sponsored  a  special  edition  of  the  Lake  City
               Reporter  to  raise  funds  to  finance  the  lunchroom.  She  organized  the  County  Council  to  link  all  PTAs

               in the various schools.
                    DR.  J.  D.  GABLE  (1937-38)  ...  He  devoted  much  of  his  personal  time  and  money  to

               maintaining  the  lunchroom  project.  Pushed  for  the  inclusion  of  art  as  a  regular  subject.  Enlisted  the
               aid  of  local  doctors  and  dentists  to  conduct  clinics  to  address  health  problems.  Was  the  first  man  to
               serve as PTA President.

                    MRS.  MELVIN  HOBSON  (1939-40)...  She  strongly  supported  the  school  lunch  programs
               to  the  point  where  110  needy  kids  got  a  free  lunch  every  day.  She  doubled  PTA  membership,  got
