And now? The Azons and E-Phi’s have not existed at CHS for may years. Such hazing of
high school students is now prohibited by Florida law.
Skipping around with more Black History
Alphonso Lofton of Lake City, a Richardson High School graduate, was the first black
Highway Patrolman in Florida.
Dekovan Levy, son of Alphonso Levy, was the first black quarterback to play for CHS.
Rev. Isadore Williams was the first black to speak at a CHS Baccalaureate.
Bette U. Lane was the first black woman to speak at a CHS Baccalaureate, and she has
done it twice. She is presently the Columbia High School nominee for county Teacher of the
Year. She plans to retire at the end of this school year.
Mary Lightfoot was the first black countywide supervisor of education back in the
1940's before racial integration.
Alphonso Levy was the first black to serve after integration in a countywide position:
Director of Art and Music. Under his direction, our county established MAD Month, a solid
month devoted to Music, Art and Drama.
Touching Lightly

The old Tigers met February 10 and began their program with a moment of silence in honor
of their departed and beloved captain, Billy Hale, Sr. Later in the program, Doug Littlefield was
elected the new captain and Jim Pittman was elected alternate captain, both by unanimous vote.
Jack Herndon then introduced former CHS principal Ken Herring who spoke on the meaning of
sports education in his life.
Keith David is a Tiger all the way. Keith is an assistant coach for the CHS Tiger wrestlers
who this year won their first district championship ever. He is a former Tiger wrestler himself and
he prefers to coach for the joy of it — so he returned his coaching supplement and worked free!
Evelyn Metzger, now 85 years old, is a wonder beyond words. She taught elementary
