his first game as head coach? The Tigers beat Eau Gallie 16-0. Shelton Keen scored the first TD
on a fumble recovery/runback. David Harrington returned a punt for a 60-yard TD. Willie
Jcrnigan, John Jackson, Ricky Gardner and Frank Smith also had great games.
In 1917-18 (when the school system was racially segregated), the total salaries of all white
teachers in the school system was $19,230. That year, every elementary school was in session just
four months, CHS was in session eight months. The lowest paid elementary teacher got a total of
$80 for the entire four months. The highest paid person was CHS principal A. B. Connor, who got
a whopping $1,400 for working the full year.

Van (Iron Man) Giebeig and his wife Lucille celebrated their 50 wedding anniversary last
week. When Van was in high school at CHS, he had a job that called for him to get up around 4 a.m.
every day and ride to Jacksonville in a truck to buy produce at the Farmer’s Market. Fie would return
to Lake City to distribute it to local grocery stores to sell, then go to school all day, then go to
football practice — where he was so good he was named team captain (along with Sidney Bryant) in
1939. Then he got up the next day and did it all over again.
The Florida Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame includes four names familiar to Lake
Citians: Hobe Hooser, Gene Cox, Crockett Farnell and Paul Quinn. Coach Hooser (1939-40)
and Coach Cox (1971-72) are past presidents of the association.

When A. K. (Keith) Black (CHS, 1921) speaks, people who want to learn should listen. So,
I listened while Keith told his opinion of the five most important events to occur during his lifetime.
1. Rural electricity (REA). “Electricity made living and working on farms a lot more
bearable. Once our fanners got electricity, they could then have any appliance a city person could
have.
2. The election of Fred P.ConeofLakeCityasgovemorofFlorida(1937-41). “Governor
Cone did so much for Lake City and Columbia County that one man told him he had alienated so
many people that Tallahassee would never give Lake City anything again. Governor Cone answered
