performances. A Porter Wagoner look-and-sound-alike, Forest particularly prizes his spectacular
guitar strap — it’s a personal gift from Elvis Presley who had used it himself.

                                                    Did You Know?

                                                            March 9,1993

So what do Ed Montgomery and old-time movie actor Clark Gable have in common? They

were the first two people many of us heard say the word “damn” in public. Clark, of course, uttered
his famous “Frankly, my dear...” in “Gone With the Wind” and Ed spoke his line in the Columbia
High School play, “Tomorrow the World” presented by the CHS Thespians.

When Clifford Hughes was a student at Lake Junior High School, he developed a “rap”

system of memorizing the states and capitals. Now an adult, he can still recite all 50 states and
                     capitals in a rapid-fire 35 seconds flat.
Another reason why I love Columbia County people: When Shirley Giebeig’s funeral

procession passed the “Pride and Joy” daycare center, there stood a straight line of preschoolers with
their teacher, all at erect attention, hands across their hearts, as the entire procession went by . . .

More of the same: At least 10 oncoming cars - not involved in the funeral procession at all - pulled
off the road, stopped, and turned on their headlights to pay respect to the deceased whom they

probably didn’t even know. A final word on that: Giebeig is the longest name in Columbia County
that is spelled the same backwards and forwards.

Highly popular CHS teacher Bettye Lane has received the ultimate honor: she had been
named the Columbia County Teacher of the Year. Bettye is so highly regarded by CHS students that

twice she has been the Baccalaureate speaker.
Eastside’s fine Special Education teacher Rosa Scott is proud that she is a lifelong friend of

Bettye Lane. They both graduated from Richardson High School together in 1954, then both
attended FAMU together. Rosa is also proud that when she later attended Tennessee State, her

dorm-mate was Wilma Rudolph, track and field star, who won three gold medals at the 1960
Olympics and the Sullivan Award in 1961 for athletic excellence

Edward Epling (CHS, 1951), only child of Bill and Mildred Epling, lost his life in a
