Some Stuff I Wrote (2001) H. Morris Williams
the man, “They won’t have to. When I’m through, we won’t need anything else’.”
3. The public library. “Our public library has always been a source of pride in our
community. For the good of our people, we always need to maintain a strong public library.”
4. Lake City Community College. “Our college had helped many people get a fine education
right here when it would have been too expensive for them to go some place else. Our community
has always supported its colleges, from Florida Agricultural College (which became part of the
University of Florida) to Columbia College (which became part of Stetson University) to LCCC.”
5. Fighting the Battle of Olustee in Olustee, not in Lake City. “This didn’t happen in my
lifetime, of course, but here is that story. Some military leaders back then said Lake City was the
best strategic place to fight the battle. But a citizen named Mr. Scarborough persuaded the military
leaders not to stage the battle in Lake City and thus saved Lake City from destruction.”
Keith Black himself — and his entire family — have been very much a part of local history.
Keith was editor-in-chief of the first CHS yearbook. After law school, he served 16 years as State
Attorney in this circuit.
Keith s wife Lassie was the first woman graduate of the University of Florida’s College of
6
Agriculture. She is also former Florida “Mother of the Year.”
Keith and Lassie’s three daughters have all done some special things. Carolyn (CHS, 1952)
was national treasurer of Future Homemakers of America. Nettie (CHS, 1955) was the first college
graduate in Music Therapy to work in Florida; and Edna (CHS, 1957) was Florida President of
Children of the American Revolution. Edna also once won a Florida Oratorical Contest - speaking
Latin!
As I said in the beginning, when Keith Black - or anybody in that family - speaks, you can
learn a lot by listening.
Skipping Around
Last week Ben Brack (CHS, 1990) got the thrill of a lifetime when he hit a grand slam
home-run to lead Huntington College to a win in Montgomery, Alabama.
Add Fred Rozelle (CHS, 1945) to those Lake Citians in the Florida Athletic Coaches Hall
of Fame. Fred, a great athlete at CHS and UF, coached championships in several sports, then served
10 years as executive director of the Florida High School Activities Association.
