Some Stuff I Wrote (2001) H. Morris Williams
Billy Hale was totally honest and plain-spoken on any and every issue. You always knew
where he stood. He was proud that he never “talked out of both sides of his mouth.” At any
meeting, his presence was always felt and his opinions were always considered. He was thoroughly
respected for all he did for CHS.
So Friday night won’t the quite the same with Billy Hale absent from seat 1, Row 11. Things
may be a bit quieter there.
But don’t be too surprised if the game gets close and you hear a booming, take-charge voice
coming down from the September night sky saying, “Come on boys! Let’s show some Tiger Pride
out there!”
Billy Hale may be at the game after all.
From Pilots to Philosophy
September 7,1993
Flying high ... Coach Hobe Hooser (CHS coach, 1931-41) produced many outstanding
football players during his tenure at CHS — and a remarkable number of his players became combat
pilots during World War n. Jack Herndon, John Paul Riviere, Fred Kinard, Jim Pitman, Doug
Epperson, Alex Stevens, Alfie Pearce, Lynwood Cumbie, “Shack” Shackleford, Gerald Witt and
probably others. And J. B. Cobb, Jr. was in pilot training when the war ended.
And now there are four ... Speaking of the Hooser Era, we lost one of our great Hooser
football captains last week. Lynwood Cumbie (CHS captain, 1937) died in Tallahassee of heart
problems. Lynwood was one of our most enthusiastic alumni — he always came back to Lake City
for CHS homecomings, class reunions, and Old Tiger meetings. With Lynwood’s death, there are
now just four members of the 1937 CHS football team remaining: Jack Herndon (alternate captain),
O’Neal Hill, Jack Davis and Earl Bedenbaugh.
One man’s philosophy... Gen. Bob Harkness (CHS, 1920) was asked what advice he would
give to the CHS class of 1994 if he had just one minute to talk. His answer: Find something you like
to do. Live one day at a time. Don’t worry about tomorrow. Pay your debts. Have fun. And don’t
lie too much!
