Vera Kilgore Heilig: Her Poetry Lives (2017) H. Morris Williams, Marie Law Haire
Two Miracles
The words God spoke: “Let plants and herbs appear
Each bearing in its fruit seeds of its kind.”
Produced a miracle. The plants were here
Created by the power of His mind.
But I must spade the earth, mound up a row
Of level soil where I can plant my seeds,
Spaced carefully to give them room to grow,
Then keep them watered and pull up the weeds.
Because for Adam’s sin the ground was cursed,
As Adam’s daughter I must toil and sweat
Before the seeds will swell their heads and burst
From that accursed soil, but when the debt
Of toil and sweat and pain has all been paid,
My garden is a miracle I’ve made.
