Vera Kilgore Heilig: Her Poetry Lives (2017) H. Morris Williams, Marie Law Haire
Not By Merit
There is no way to justify myself
Before God’s throne
By any act of mine. No I must come
By faith alone.
My trust must be in Christ my Advocate
For if I try
To plead my cause on my own merit I
Am sure to die.
Neither my noble deeds nor my intent
Can ever win
My case. My righteousness, a filthy rag
I stained with sin.
Christ is the door. If robber-like I try
To scale the wall,
Or if I would go in some other way
I only fall
I cannot of myself be good enough.
Faith is the root
Of my salvation. Any good I do
Is but the fruit.
