The 2001 Columbia High School Varsity Baseball Team should have a very productive
season this year. There are nine seniors and ten juniors. They have all kinds of new skills and
are off to great start.
The Pre-season Classic's first game was a greatchallenge with the Tigers over Union
County 8-1 , but in the second game they were shut out by Buchholz with a 5-0 score.
Another exciting plus for the team was being ranked in the top 10 in the state poll in
March after spanking Gainesville High School 11-1 . 1. The Tigers started off that game when
Travis Saunders scored on Justin Parks' sac fly and Levi Register sent an awesome line drive to
3rd for a single. Register stole second on a Brent Whitcomb double. John Dortch, Justin
Richards and Austin Johnson provided plenty of action as well as Randall Peeler's smooth
pitching and a great big homer off of Kyle Jones' hot bat.
The Tigers provided plenty of action both at home and away and many teams felt the
heat and were glad of the "mercy rule"! Coach BrianSaunders enjoyed another successful season
with the help of Andy Bennett as assistant.
