SLOW START ... FAST FINISH

The 2001 Varsity Football team had a some-
what slow start, but they had a strong, fast
          finish. T
hey started off with heartbreaking losses to
          Suwannee (1 0-7) and Buchholz (1 0-9). How-
ever, they soon began to gain speed and win
games. The first win of the season came against
          Clay High (21-14) and West Nassua ( 49-1 2)
was the next victim. The Tigers then fell to
Lincoln with a final score of (24-22). The team
bounced back with a big win over Sante Fe (35-
0). After that game, the Tigers got on a roll
and reeled out five straight wins. The first two
          wins came from Tallahassee powerhouses
Godby (31-1 0) and Leon (33-28). The final
regular season win came against Gainesville High
          (45-21).
The Tigers had a bye week and then had to
travel to Pensacola Niceville for the first round
of the state playoffs. The game was a nail biter
but they left with a win (25-24). The next team
the Tigers had to face was Jacksonville Jack-
son. The Jackson "Tigers" were undefeated in
the regular season and were favored to defeat
          the Columbia "Tigers". Fortunately, Columbia
came to play and defeated Jackson ( 41 -1 9). In
the third round of the playoffs the Tigers had
to face Lincoln for the second time. Unfortu-
nately, the Trojans were too strong for the Ti-
gers again and defeated the Tigers with a score
of (35-17). The Tigers final record was 8-4
and their district record was 4-1 . Overall, the
Tigers had a good season finishing second in
their district and went to the third round of the
playoffs eventually losing to the state champi-
ons, the Lincoln Trojans. by Terrell Gnff1n
