Varsity Football:
Start to Finish
Summer vacation, to many, means a time to relax, rest, and have fun. However, to the CHS football team, it is a time to
prepare and condition for the upcoming season with no distractions such as homework or projects to hinder them along the way.
All of this work is done so that we, as a team, can accomplish the main goals set out by each player and coach and strive to
bring home the state title for the first time since 1967.
The season's first practice began on the first day of school. The team was wasting no time in taking the next step
needed for the dream to come true. We were well prepared for our first game, but of course it was cancelled. So we spent the
next week preparing for the big game. Suwannee came in ready to win, yet it still was not enough to stop Andre Copeland, with
183 rushing yards and 136 of those in the second half. We took home the win that night and came closer to reaching our goals.
The team took home a win with a score of 24-17.
Still on the road, Columbia surpasses another long time opponent at Buchholz, beating them 24-14. The Columbia
offense struggled to find rhythm at times but the defense was having a sack fest, taking down the Buchholz quarterback six to
eight times.
The last of the three road games consisted of playing Land O'Lakes, a playoff team in the 2002-2003 season that made
it to the third round. However, since Columbia has been to the playoffs nearly every year, they knew all about playing playoff
type teams and came away as the winner of this match-up 28-7. The defense for Columbia seemed to shut down the Land
O'Lakes rushing offense by holding them to negative yardage on the ground. Andre Copeland, along with Colt Green, led an
offense that just kept on rolling that night. Derrick Fulton and Albert Coker both had interceptions on the defensive side of the
ball to slow down Land O'Lakes offense.
The first home game finally arrived. Clay High School showed up ready to rumble. Both teams being undefeated
created a big rivalry for the team. Both defensive sides struggled at first to keep the other team from scoring, but it was
Columbia that came out after half time with a different attitude and shut down Clay's offense, giving Columbia its fourth win of
the season. However, it was George Timmons and lan Smith that helped lead the Tiger offense to take the game. The final
score was 27-19.
Homecoming week really got the Tiger's pumped. Players, students and teachers were all ready and expecting a win to
make Columbia's record 5-0. All of this hype was necessary in order to win, especially when a team player is hurt. Colt Green
