Some Stuff I Wrote and Some Stuff I Didn't (2011) H. Morris Williams
*lnns: Borum House, Chicago House, Thrasher House, etc.
*Businesses: Cotton gins, Wagon and carriage works, Grocery stores,
druggists, physicians, surgeon, livery stable, attorney, carpenter, etc.
In short, the lithograph is a snapshot of Lake City life in 1885.
Thank you so much, Bob Kenney!
SKIPPING AROUND
*ln 1989, Coach Gene Cox (CHS 1952) brought his Leon High School
football team to Memorial Stadium to play our Tigers. Local townspeople
arranged a “Welcome Home, Coach Cox” pre-game ceremony to honor
Gene who had just become the winningest Coach in Florida high school
football history. The ceremony went well for Coach Cox but the game
didn’t. The Tigers beat Leon 69-10. The next day the headline in the
Tallahassee Democrat read, “ Lake City Honors Coach Cox, Then Buries
Him.”
*Last week I wondered if the “ Hog Wild and Pig Crazy” booth that had the
catchy name Habeus Porkus was sponsored by lawyers and it turns out it
was. Event Director Heyward Christie called to tell me that booth was
indeed sponsored by a legal firm.
*Dr. Joe Crescimbini, former Asst. School Supt. and teacher in our school
system, died suddenly in the middle of the school year in 1985, leaving
adults and students alike stunned. Denise Bandemer, age 14, wrote a
poem entitled “My Memories of Dr. C. Shall Remain” in which she paid
tribute to her favorite teacher for his ‘loving, caring, and sharing’. It’s
hard to believe that 22 years have passed since Dr. C. died--and that
Denise is now in her mid 30’s.
STOP AHEAD
A young man was driving his lady friend home after their date when he
said, “Honey, you get prettier every time I look at you. Do you know
what that’s a sign of?” She said, “Yes, you’re about to run out of gas!”
