Some Stuff I Wrote and Some Stuff I Didn't (2011) H. Morris Williams
Another way Granddad got gators was to locate their holes or caves, usually in a
swamp. He would try to grunt 'em up, then shoot or hatchet them. Sometimes he would
take his long pole with a large hook in the end and pull them out alive or he might leave a
baited hook tied to a tree. His son, Tom, said at times Granddad would block the hole
entrance with logs and limbs so the gator couldn’t get out for air, and drown. He didn’t
give them any quarter. If they were in his area, however big they grew, he got after them.
His harvesting heyday was in the 1920’s, ‘30’s and 40’s. He was still killing some in the
‘50’s after moving to Central Florida. While I was growing up I saw fresh hides brought
in.
Folks, Granddad was the real deal. He used Asorbine Junior on his itchy eyes.
He said it was the only thing that would stop the itch. It was athlete’s foot medication.
On a raw spot it was hot stuff. Need I say more?
