Some Stuff I Wrote and Some Stuff I Didn't (2011) H. Morris Williams
Ferra’s father, Dr. Frank Appell, was a pharmacist who owned the Seminole
Pharmacy at 827 North Marion Street. He gave me my first job there when I was
just 12 years old and I learned a lot from him about work habits and politeness to
customers.
When Ferra died, it marked the sad end of a great family— there are no
descendants- and an end to an era. My sincere thanks, posthumously, to Ferra
for leaving us so much to remember her by. Thanks also to Shirley Hoffman
whom Ferra trusted to deliver the documents to our School Museum.
FUN WITH PREACHERS
Lake City’s First Baptist Church celebrated their 136th Homecoming last Sunday
and I was glad to see former pastors there: Rev. Robert Davis (24 years) and
“Parson Carson” Brittain (14 years and now Pastor Emeritus).
Rev. Davis delivered a fine sermon but caught himself in a big ‘oops’ when he
told the congregation that he was glad to see so many “old faces” in the group.
OOPS! Then he good-naturedly revised his sentence and said he was glad to
see “the faces of so many friends he had not seen in a long time.” Naturally
everybody laughed.
Rev. Brittain, now around 90 years old, demonstrated his world-class sense of
humor at the end of the service. He was permitted to leave first to beat the rush
to the dining hall and when he started walking very slowly out, he said in a stage
whisper, “I’m leaving now to go to lunch but the way I move it may be supper
time by the time I get there!”
I don’t know of any church in Lake City that has had more of a positive impact on
the spiritual life of our town than the First Baptist Church. Or any one that serves
better food at Homecoming! May they always prosper!
FAMILIAR NAME
An optometrist was showing a Polish immigrant an eye chart with the letters
CZWIXNOSTACZ and asked him, “Can you read this?” The Polish guy said,
“Read it? I know that guy!”
