Some Stuff I Wrote and Some Stuff I Didn't (2011) H. Morris Williams

                 JOHNNY BULLARD’S LAKE CITY MEMORIES

Johnny Bullard is a well-known Hamilton County citizen and a brilliant educator
who went to high school in Lake City. I asked him to recall some of his favorite
memories from his Lake City high school days. Here is what he said:

                     • *Dr. Lou Landrum making house calls.
                     • *The delicious popcorn Mr. Hurst sold at Hurst’s Hole in the Wall.
                     • *The smell and taste of donuts from Po Boys Donuts.
                     • *The always-friendly atmosphere of Edith and Palmer Purser’s DeSoto
                         Drug Store.
                     • *Spoon Burger’s from McCrary’s Dime Store.
                     • *Bruce’s Clothing Store and being fitted for shoes there by Herbert
                         Bohrman.
                     • *The Magnolia Bar-B-Que, their great barbecue and chicken and shrimp
                         baskets.

You doubtless have your own memories, just like Johnny. If you also have
photographs to go along with your memories, remember to bring them to the
Columbia County Historical Museum starting October 10 so they can become
part of the Columbia County pictorial book that will depict all our memories.

                  LCCC’S FIRST LIBRARIAN

Ella Frances, 95, died in Gainesville August 2. She was the founding librarian at
LCCC, known in those first days as Lake City Junior College and Forest Ranger
                  School.

When Ella was first hired, there was no college library yet and she worked in the
basement of what is now our School Board Complex. From there she ordered all
the books and processed them for use.

LCCC’s founding president, Dr. Herbert Phillips often said, “From the beginning
we will have fine personnel and an outstanding library because those are the
heart of a junior college. I selected Ella Frances as our first librarian because I
know she will build us a first class library.”

Ella Frances, often working under difficult circumstances, did indeed deliver a
top-notch library and her successors like Noah Lindsay and Jim Morris have
                  maintained that tradition of excellence.
