Some Stuff I Wrote and Some Stuff I Didn't (2011) H. Morris Williams
*Mikesville Presbyterian Church will celebrate their 131st homecoming on
Sunday, October 14. Pastor Herb Brownlee says visitors are always welcome.
Drive US 41/441 south well past I-75 and look for signs on the left.
*We are looking for photos of the old Grand and Columbia theaters. The Grand
Theater was located across South Marion Street from the current DeSoto Drug
Store. When the Grand closed in 1946, the Columbia was built about one block
to the north. The Columbia kept its name for 21 years, then was renovated and
renamed The Gateway. That building is now a church.
*A little late but congratulations to school system retirees Richard Bryant and Ann
Douglass. Richard was a fine custodian at CHS and was once named the CHS
employee of the Year. Ann was an excellent instructor, mainly in the Language
Arts programs at the junior high and high school levels. Both are already missed.
*Two sisters who taught at the old Lake City Junior High School in the 1970’s
called recently. Carol Mattox is now teaching in Lake Butler with Ramona Johns,
another former LCJHS teacher. Carol’s sister, Kathy Dekle, is now retired from
the insurance industry and living in Blairsville, GA.
‘ Congratulations to CHS head football coach Danny Green and his wife Pam.
Their son Colt just graduated from UF and he finished his degree in Finance in
just three years.
‘ School Museum thanks to Ed Montgomery for photos of David Rollins, CHS
basketball coach in 1944...To Ora Lee Witt for an excellent 1953 photo of Claude
R. Hurst standing next to his famous popcorn machine by the “Hole in the
Wall”...and to CHS teacher Nancy Ring for donating six older copies of the CHS
literary magazine, “Prints."
‘Congratulations to Bethlehem Baptist pastor, Rev. Lowell G. O’Steen, and his
fine congregation for exceeding their goal of having 100 in church on Hi-
Attendance Day. They had 111 there and the entire day was joyous and
uplifting.
Sunday October 28 will be Bethlehem’s Homecoming Day and my dear friend,
Rev. Ivan Clements, will be guest preacher.
GETTING PACKED
The seven-year-old boy asked his grandpa to make a sound like a frog. The
grandpa asked him why and the kid said, “Because grandma said as soon as you
croak we’re going to Disneyland.”
