Located off of Bell Road, approximately 1.14 miles NW of Five Points Elementary
School, this property was deeded to “Board of Public Instruction” for $1.00 by Lott
W. Johnson on July 3' 1888. The property is about lA mile (1,171 ft.) from the
roadway- The approximate GPS Coordinates for this property are
(30.232586, -82.651139). The property is bordered on all 4 sides by timber land
owned by Audrey Bullard.
Tbs property was used to build New Smyrna School. According to School Board
Historical Records, New Smyrna was built sometime before 1890. During School-
Year 1904-05, the school listed a total of 18 students ranging from age 5 to 19
Students’ last names included Mills, Waldron, Morgan, Dees, Miller, Langston, and
Sealey. Mrs. M. A. Hoover was listed as guardian to the Morgan children.
At a meeting of the School Board on July 3,1906, the Trustees of the Winfield
Special District petitioned the School Board to close the school. The Board
approved the closing of the school and students were reassigned to Winfield School
Those students living “beyond the limit of a school” were finnished transportation
at the expense of the Board of Public Instruction for the term at a rate of $2 per
pupil per month.” ,
There is currently no visible sign of the old school on the property.
