Chapter Fourteen: 1940 - 1949

When the decade of the 1940s ended, many Lake City resi-
dents who had served in World War II returned to resume their lives.
It had been a trying time, but the new decade promised better days
ahead - especially with a local forestry school; a hospital that allowed
patients to remain near their homes instead of traveling to Jackson-
ville, Tallahassee, or Gainesville for treatment; and an airport that would
connect the local residents more easily with the rest of the world.
