Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy
Lamar Ellis (also CHS 1952) was an all-state lineman and
a dominating force on the football field. Although he was an interior
lineman, he had always wanted to score a touchdown for CHS but,
as the clock ticked down in his final game, he felt that would never
happen. But then, in the final stages of the Live Oak game, the team
had Lamar switch positions with Gene Cox so Lamar became the
running back - and he blasted through the line for his treasured
touchdown.
Hoyt Horne (CHS 1953) was a brilliant, hard-hitting, show-
no-mercy linebacker who made all conference. He became part of
CHS football lore when he was named team captain along with two
teammates, Matt Burns and John Wood. That was the first time
ever that CHS had three captains—and all three captains became
doctors!
The Columbia High School boys’ basketball team in 1950 -
Ted Tucker was the coach. Coach Tucker later left CHS for a
career with the F.B.I.
He is a member of the Kent State University sports’ Hall of Fame.
