Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy
Chapter Fifteen: 1950 - 1959
Columbia High School
The first CHS Alumni Association was started in 1950. The
first officers were Robert Louis Green, president; Norma Sherrill
Hackney, vice president; and Marjorie Williams Tyson, secretary-
treasurer. They hosted the first homecoming banquet in the then-brand-
new Melrose Park Elementary cafeteria, and former CHS coach Hobe
Hooser, then coaching at UF, was the honored guest.
The Columbia High School girls’ basketball team in 1950 -
the coach of the girls’ team is the same Norma Elaine Brown
who became an Air Force general - see previous chapter.
Several CHS football players from that decade need to be
mentioned here. Gene Cox (CHS 1952) was a captain and All-
Southern running back his senior season of 1951 as he led his team to
a 10-0 season and a 33-0 win over Live Oak in the first Old Oaken
Bucket game. He became a coach and was the first Florida high school
football coach to win 300 games.
