The local National Guard unit was redesignated as Head-
quarters and Service Company, 187th Tank Battalion (1955); reor-
ganized and redesignated as Headquarters Company (less Battalion
Medical Section), 1st Medium Tank Battalion, 187th Armor, and an
element of the 48th Armored Division (1959). There have been sev-
eral more up-to-date reorganizations of the divison.
Robert “Bob” Harkness Jr. (CHS 1920) may have been
the only local soldier to rise through the ranks to become a general
and head of the Lake City division of the National Guard.
