Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy
Chapter Fifteen: 1950 - 1959
Richardson High School
Richardson High School (RHS), the county’s traditionally all-
black high school, had a banner year in 1957. Using mainly hand-me-
down books and equipment from white schools, the faculty and staff
there worked well to teach their students. Principal G.W. Ellis had his
school faculty working hard to upgrade itself so it could become a
member of the Southern Association of Accredited Schools and
Colleges—and they succeeded! The student newspaper was named
“The RHS Wolf Pack.” Larry Johnson was the newspaper editor
with Franch Glenn and Ernest Brown serving as associate editors.
Priscilla Williams was named “Miss Richardson High School.”
The school’s former principals include Henna Richardson
(namesake of the school), F.G.S. Everett, Herman Tunsil, E.R.
Rolfe, Rubin P. Kenon, C.W. Banks, Hosea Lee Rountree, A.L.
Green, G.W. Ellis, and Martin Luther Ferguson.
Some of RHS’s teachers were Charlotte Anders, Coach
R.H. Anders, Creasy Brown Brady, Celestine Combs, Robert
Douglas, N.L. Dupree, Johnnie Goodbread, Jimmie Green,
Lovett Mobley, Harold Pearson,
and Hanson Wright. Coach Anders
went on to become a legend in the
community and later became a school
board member. He is the only school
system employee to serve for 50
consecutive years.
