Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy
Chapter Fifteen: 1950 - 1959
A group of Lake Citians during the centennial celebration
Claude R. Hurst (pictured to
the left) operated his tiny but
legendary “Hole-in-the Wall”
peanuts-and-popcorn store
from the early 1940s to the
1960s. Movie and TV star
Dub (Cannonball) Taylor
(“Petticoat Junction”)
stopped there one night to
eat and said Hurst’s popcorn
was “the best I ever ate.”
Hurst’s newspaper ads
declared, “Some call it little,
some call it small. We just
call it Hurst’s Hole
in the Wall.”
