Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy
The so-called “Beard Guard/
Kissing Kard” (to the left) and
a shaving permit (below)
Some of the wives soon got tired of the men’s scratchy beards
and held a short, mock parade displaying protest placards that read:
“Off with the beards,” “Oh they stick,” and “Off with the fuzz.” There
was even anti-beard poetry: “The men about town used to look so
fine—but now they look like a porcupine.” Bishop Agency employees
tried to help the ladies by distributing “beard guards,” face-shaped
masks with an opening for lips so the lady being kissed wouldn’t get
scratched.
