Some Stuff I Wrote (2001) H. Morris Williams
Frank and Beverly Ott
Speaking of Presbyterians, long-time member Frank Ott died last week. Frank’s daughter,
Beverly Ott, was the first child Dr. E. F. Montgomery, Sr. baptized when he first came to Lake City
back in 1926.
Dale Cray
CHS Tiger running back Dale Cray once rushed for nearly 300 yards in one game, a 42-41
loss to Sandalwood, under Coach Bob Simmons.
Gen. Norman Schwartzkopf
I was once a faculty member at Frankfurt (Germany) American High School. One of our
student graduates from several years before was Gen. Norman Schwartzkopf of Desert Storm fame.
Dena Snodgrass
Dena Snodgrass taught at CHS in the 1930's. She moved to Jacksonville and became a
meticulous historian of Duval County and Florida history. For many years, Dena was a writer and
researcher for Kiplinger magazine.
Tiny Long
Tiny Long once hit a home-run for the Florida Gators in the 1930’s. The youthful WRUF
announcer who broadcast Tiny’s home-run was the legendary Red Barber. Listening to that radio
cast in Lake City was a lovely young woman named Mary Louise Forrester. She already had a“crush”
on Tiny and when she heard him hit the home-run she talked her dad into letting her go to
Gainesville the following day to see Tiny play the next game. Tiny didn’t hit a home-run that next
day but he did eventually get Mary Louise for his wife and they have been married ever since.
Gene Cox
Gene Cox (CHS, 1952) has been selected as Florida’s nominee to be the National High
School Coach of the Year. Coach Cox, now head mentor at Aucilla Christian, has 293 career wins,
the most in Florida and three more than Valdosta High coaching legend, Wright Bazemore.
