The old CIIS red-brick building on West Duval Street across from Quincy’s is undergoing
major renovation. It is a shock to see the interior of the building so stripped. The auditorium has
no seats in it. The floors and walls are bare. From the second floor you can look up and see the
underside of the roof. All lockers have been removed from hallways and all toilet facilities from
restrooms. The balcony in the auditorium is visible again. But all this is necessary to convert the
building into administrative space and the outside will look the same way it always has.

Hunt (CHS, 1934) remembers when she went to school in Columbia City many years ago in the old
building. “Fannie Hobbs was our principal and she would light into you if you misbehaved. She
checked on personal things like whether your hair was washed or you finger nails were clean. One
year I was there was the first year the county started providing us school buses to get to school.
Before that, you had to walk or get there the best way you could.”

CHS grad Ray Kirkland recently retired after 19 years as public relations manager at
OxyChem. One of Ray’s greatest contribution has been to coordinate OxyChem’s generous support

happy retirement.

she had the fourth tire replaced and was driving home-Pow!- the spare tire blew out.
I mentioned last week that General Van Fleet’s sister used to teach at CHS. I should have
