Some Stuff I Wrote (2001) H. Morris Williams

                                              Everyday Heroes

                                                     January 12, 1993

                                                        Jimmy Greene
Jimmy Greene has donated his time to cook nearly 200 chicken pilaus to benefit schools (like

Melrose and Five Points) and other non-profit groups (like the CHS Alumni and the Masons). He
has cooked for as many as 3,500 people at one time. “Sure it takes a lot of time and work but I enjoy

doing it - enjoy helping people, especially our young people. This is my way of doing my part to

                help people.”
                                                      Linda Gail Thomas
Linda Gale Thomas has on several occasions baked and delivered enough cinnamon rolls for

the entire CHS football team. She also prepares , delivers, and serves an assortment of delicious
pies, cakes and rolls every Monday night to the Quarterback Club. All this even though she does not

have a son on the team; “I like to cook and I like to see people enjoy themselves. I especially like
               to help young people.”

                                                        Tony Thomas
Tony Thomas is the official “Honorary Assistant Principal” at Fort White Public School.

Tony volunteers at the school every day, 40 hours or more weekly. He supervises the bus area,
answers the office phones, monitors the cafeteria. He sets up all equipment for assembly programs,

coordinates the volunteer program, attends all PTO meetings. He attends all football and basketball
games and operates the concession stand. He is always smiling, always cheerful, always humorous -

and he seemed amazed that everybody thought he was so important to the school when he was
              named “Volunteer of the Year.”

                                                      Raymond Dykes
Raymond Dykes has conducted a self-appointed prison ministry for 40 years. His goodness

extends almost beyond belief. He is the real thing, the genuine article. He brings cheer, hope and
comfort to “convicts”. He takes time with all he meets, creating little seasons of fellowship and good
will. His entire life counts for goodness and service. Now past 80 years of age, his head is covered

with winter’s snows but the sunshine of eternal spring is in his heart. “If in 40 years I have
