Retired four-star General James Alward Van Fleet died September 23, 1992 at the age of
100. He had led combat campaigns at the Battle of the Bulge, on D-Day, and in the Korean Police
Action. His sister, Mattie Van Fleet, taught General Bob Harkness (CHS 1919) at CHS and was
a frequent visitor in the Harkness home.
Catherine Leslie’s daughters Barbara and Marilyn both won the title “Miss Columbia High
School,” six years apart. I wonder if they are the only sisters to win that honor.
Teresa Register, popular counselor at Niblack, is a graduate of Flagler College in St.
Augustine. Her daughter, Pam, is now a sophomore student at Flagler. When Pam graduates, she
and Teresa will be the first mother-daughter combination to graduate from Flagler College.
Cathy Lowenstein was recently named Florida’s Forester of the Year for 1992. Cathy’s
maiden name was Brothers. She grew up in a Baptist family so her father was called “Brother
Brothers,” her mother was “Sister Brothers,” and of course her brothers were the “Brothers
Brothers”. Cathy has such a rich sense of humor and has had a lot fun with this over the years.

life has had an abundance of tragedy. Just last week David’s sister Loraine (only 32 years old) and
her son Maurice (age 15) were burned to death in a house fire. On January 8, 1992, David’s dad got
sick and died, long before his time. Several years ago, David’s two brothers, Johnnie and Verlon,
both drowned at the same time at Watertown Lake. Our entire community extends its sympathy to
this fine family as it endures another tragedy.
School Board Chairman Richard Anders was a top-flight high school football coach
before his retirement. His first coaching job was at Dunbar High in Ft. Myers where he led his team
to the conference championship, using lots of underclassmen. The next year, Coach Anders moved
to Lake City to coach the Richardson Wolves and found that Dunbar High was on the Richardson
schedule. The Dunbar team used what Coach Anders had taught them to defeat Anders’ Richardson
