Tigers Vetoed by Senators
The Tigers started the game in their
usual powerful running attack, with
Kelly Lowrey running the potent Ti-
ger veer offense. The running game
consisted of bruising runs up the
middle by senior fullback Tommy
Young, or quick outside pitches to
Allen Blair and Marshall Wilson.
Tommy Young, the past Gateway
Conference rushing title holder,
gained 102 yards in 18 carries.
During the first half both teams were
pretty evenly matched. As the game
progressed the Tiger defense tight-
ened-up when linebacker Lugene
Smith sacked the Senator quarter-
back twice and senior defensive .
end Jim Breza recovered two key
fumbles. However, late in the third
quarter the Senator quarterback
threw a screen pass to his speedy
halfback who then broke a couple
of would-be tacklers and scam-
pered 69-yards for a Fletcher
touchdown.
The only promising moments for the
Tigers came right before the half
and in the final quarter. With less
than a minute remaining in the half
kicker Paul Johnson tried to boot a
last second field goal. Time ran out
and the Tigers went to the dressing
room down hearted.
The Tigers loss was accredited to
four fumbles and two key inter-
ceptions by the Senators. It was the
Tigers first game and the first shut
out in three years. The Lake City v.s.
Fletcher jinx still remains as neither
team has ever won at home.
1. Fred Sykes makes one of those great Tiger
tackles. 2. Guerry Espenship proceeds to
stop Senator on the 30 yard line. 3. Tommy
Young makes his first touchdown of the
game. 4. Kelly Lowrey, quarterback keeps the
ball.
