                                                       Advice to the Underclassmen

I think that I shall never be,
as smart as the person next to me.
His test paper I shall try to inspect,
to see if I think his answers are correct.
During a test, when I was doing quite badly,
I saw his test paper to copy quite gladly.
I erased all my answers, and wrote down all his,
and said to myself, "That exam was a whiz".
When I got back my test and saw what I'd made,
I was startled to see the most terrible grade.
When I copied his paper, I made my mistake,
for that is the last chance I'll ever take.
So if you copy, then I wish you would,
                                             use your own answers,
                                             they'll do you more good.

                                                                 Change

With every new step I take,
a new part of me is born.
                                                And deep inside,
a part of me must die.
And while this newness gives me insight,
like a window pane wiped clean.
It seals a doorway to the past.
                                                The present is transition,
                                                the future lies ahead.
                                                The past is simply gone,
                                                and nothing more.
                                                It's influence has shaped today,
                                                but tomorrow is almost here.
The voice of the past has sounded,
and now it must be stilled.
                                                Today I will listen,
while the future speaks to me.
And prepares me for what is yet to come.
                                                For life is change,
                                                and even the earth,
                                                can't survive without being molded,
carved by the wind and rain.
I must be molded with laughter,
                                                and carved with tears.
                                                Then with eyes wide
                                                I'll step into tomorrow.
