Sophomore Teresa Freeney was on the move. As
she went up the court for two points, faithful Lady
Tiger, Nikki Harris, guards her back door.
Nikki Harris dominated the court as she went up for
a lay-up. The Columbia High Tigers were on a roll.
B-A-S-K-E-T, basket for a victory.
And this is what Columbia High's girls basketball team did ....... made

Columbia High wasn't supposed to get anywhere near State Girl's ·~· .
Basketball Tournament (man wasn't supposed to walk on the moon ; ,
either). Four consecutive post-season victories, coupled with a three-
win streak that ended the regular season, had the Lady Tigers sitting on
an 18-9 record along with District, Regional, and Sectional titles. The •
girls' team appearance in Lakeland (the State Finals) marked the first
trip to the finals for a Columbia High girls basketball team since the
1967-68 boys team. Coach Hill and assistant Coach Lorenzo Jones
always felt that the girls would make it to State. They also knew that Coach Assistant Coach
the girls would come out with a winning season. "We've already made Debra Hill Lorenzo Jones
history. I feel like we're going to make more!" Coach Debra Hill
predicted.lt had appeared that the Lady Tigers would pull off the back-
to-back upsets. However, in the final test of skill and determination ,
the burden of their task finally hit home. Leading Miami Carol City 47- Laquasha Dixon was on the GO! Up the court she went for a great plaY
38 with one quarter left in the game, the Lady Tigers went through a
somber six minutes and fell to the Lady Chiefs 63-56.
Not only was this a physical bout for the Championship, but a mental
