Chapter Twelve: 1920 - 1929
Lake City School Improvement Association
In 1921, some parents felt there should be more harmony
between the home and the schools so they met and organized the
Lake City School Improvement Association. They established these
six rules to promote such harmony:
“1. We parents should strive to see only the good points in
our children’s teachers and to emphasize those good points
to our children. 2. We should always believe that our teachers
are trying to do their best for our children. 3. We should never
criticize teachers in the presence of our children or others. 4.
We should visit the school as often as possible so that our
teachers may be assured of our interest in them and in the well
being of all pupils. 5. If we believe strongly that a teacher is
using unwise methods with our children, we should have a
friendly talk with them about the matter before referring it to a
higher authority. 6. We should make gentle enforcement of
obedience to wise rules a vital principle of child-rearing so
that the home and the school may work together in harmony.”
Many of today’s teachers probably wish those six rules were still in
effect.
