Lake City’s Woman’s Club
Soon after local women established the Lake City Woman’s
Club in 1905, they started a library, which was originally located in a
store on what is now North Marion. In 1922, the women moved it to
the building that housed the Woman’s Club (pictured above) on S.E.
Hernando Avenue. It remained there until it closed in 1970. The Lake
City Woman’s Club Library was the only public library in the city until
1959.
The Kiwanis Club, pictured above in 1924, is one of several
civic clubs that have made Lake City a better place to live. One of
their projects was at one time over a three-year period to give a book
to the family of every newborn baby in the county. Other civic clubs
included the Lions and Rotary. Fraternal groups included the Elks,
Masons, Moose, and Shriners.
