Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy
In 1968, she was a delegate to the Democratic National Con-
vention and in 1990 was honored by the Florida Senate. As Colum-
bia County’s home demonstration agent, she taught skills such as can-
ning, instituted a health program that installed a drinking fountain in the
courthouse to replace a bucket and dipper, arranged for female 4-H
Club members to have free physical examinations at Lake City’s Vet-
erans Hospital, and established a garden club and other associations
throughout the county. At one point she was named Florida “Mother
of the Year.” Her family was one of the more important ones in the life
and culture of Lake City. Her husband, Keith Black, was editor-in-
chief of the first CHS yearbook. After law school, he served for 16
years as State Attorney in the circuit that included Lake City.
The three daughters of Lassie and Keith excelled in different
fields: Carolyn (CHS 1952) was national treasurer of Future Home-
makers of America; Nettie (CHS 1955) was the first college gradu-
ate in Music Therapy to work in Florida; and Edna (CHS 1957) was
Florida President of Children of the American Revolution. She also
once won a Florida oratorical contest, speaking about the importance
of studying Latin!
