Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy
An 1896 sawmill on Railroad Street in Lake City
The October 2, 1896 edition of Jacksonville’s newspaper,
The Florida Times-Union, reported that a very strong hurricane
caused much damage, but very little loss of life, in Lake City and
Columbia County in previous days. The winds, which reached speeds
as high as 150 miles per hour, toppled trees and damaged houses and
- more importantly - made Floridians who live inland experience how
hurricanes can affect the whole state.
In 1899, Lake City saw a new newspaper published there:
The Florida Index.
The county superintendents of public instruction for the 1890s
probably included these men: E.G. Persons (1887 - 1893), T.C.
Collins (1893 - 1895), Edgar G. Persons (1895 - 1897), and H.L.
Avant (1897 - 1901).
The mayors that decade were an unknown person (served
1885 - April 1893), J.M. Futch (April 1893 - April 1894), A.B.
Hagen (April 1894 - April 1895), L.F. Frink (April 1895 - April
1896), Guy G. Gillen (April 1896 - April 1897), and R. Rogers
(April 1897 - April 1900).
