Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy
Chapter Nine: 1890 - 1899
Members of the Lake City Police Department in the 1890s
included (left to right) O. S. Moore Sr.; unidentified; Police
Chief Eaton (on horse); Jeff Hunt, and George Douglas Sr.
The police chiefs that decade, as far as can be determined,
were Tom Michaler (1885 - 1890), W.T. “Will” Strange (1890 -
1892), Buford Carrol (1892 - 1895), J.W. Robinson (1895 - 1897),
R.H. Coxe (1896 - 1897), A.J. Miller (1897), J.A. Bethea (1897
- 1898), and B.F. Eaton (1898 - 1900).
As the 19th century ended, Lake Citians had much to be
proud of: a thriving county with a strong economy based partly on the
growing of Sea Island cotton, a central location in north Florida serviced
by major highways and a good railway system, a growing Florida
Agricultural College that was becoming the major college in the state,
and hard-working citizens. Many looked forward to what the new
century would bring.
