By 1895, the J&P Coates Company Knitting Mill in Lake
City (pictured above) was one of the largest industries in the area.
Beginning in 1880, the mill purchased Sea Island cotton from area
growers and made cotton thread. By 1900 the mill employed 100
people, and Sea Island cotton was the county’s primary cash crop.
Road pavers like this large machine paved roads
outside of Lake City, for example the so-called “Wire Road”
down to the Santa Fe River.
