Some Stuff I Wrote (2001) H. Morris Williams
James Montgomery
Becky Etheridge Todd says James Montgomery is a teacher she will always remember. “I
I was injured when I was in school and couldn’t write. James worked with me every day after school
for several months to help me keep up my work and stay on the honor roll.”
Doc Melton and Sam Oosterhoudt
Luther Collier, a 1940s graduate, gives special mention to two of his athletic coaches, Doc
Melton and Frank Oosterhoudt, who were volunteer coaches at CHS during World War II when
many regular coaches were away at war.
P. A. Browning
Sheriff Tom Tramel remembers his junior high principal, P. A. Browning, with a mixture of
fear and respect. “One day I was walking down the hall. Suddenly I felt myself being lifted to his
6
eye level, my feet dangling in the air. Mr. Browning said, You got a hall pass, boy?’ I said ‘Y-y-y-
yessir’ and showed him. He gently lowered me and I hot-footed it to my class. That is a man I will
always respect.”
Judy Patterson
A young woman who attended Lake City Community College spoke highly of Judy Patterson.
“I was a high school dropout, very insecure, low self-esteem. The idea of going to college scared
me to death but I had a young child and knew, as a single parent, I had to improve my education.
Judy Patterson took me under her wing, encouraged me, tutored me, counseled me, built me up,
made me believe in myself. Without Judy, I would have flunked out for sure. With her help, I
maintained a straight ‘A’ average while I was there. Now I know I can finish four years of college
and be anything I want to be. I owe it all to Judy Patterson.”
June Woodbridge
June Woodbridge is the current Columbia Count Teacher of the Year. You can be sure she
is a memorable teacher for many children at the Kindergarten Center.
