Some Stuff I Wrote (2001) H. Morris Williams
Hooser and Quinn
August 23,1994
Coach Hobe Hooser (1931 -42) and Coach Paul Quinn (1964-70) are generally considered to
be two of the most successful coaches CHS has ever had. Take a look at the best four consecutive
years each coach had and you will see why.
First, Coach Hooser’s four best years were 1931-34. During that span, CHS won 42 games,
lost just one, and tied two for a sparkling 42-1-2. CHS also outscored the opposition 900-139. In
1931, the Tiger defense allowed their 11 opponents a season-long total one point per game. Hooser’s
Tigers were undefeated three years during this time!
■ Coach Paul Quinn’s best four consecutive years were 1966 (10-1), 1967 (13-0), 1968 (10-1),
1 and 1969 (11 -1) for a 44-3 record. Also, in that four-year time, CHS outscored opponents 1,364-223
* including 24 shutouts and Quinn’s Tigers captured a state championship and two Sunshine Bowl
victories!
) The Tiger captains during Coach Hooser’s “best four” were Mub Richards (1931), Tiny Joe
) Long (1932), Foster Milton (1933), and Dorsey Hill (1934).
I Coach Quinn did not appoint season-long captains but the players closely associated with his
top four teams were Donnie Williams (1966), Roby Dobelstein (1967), Pete Giebeig (1968) and
Walt Peterson (1969).
i Thus, the eight year totals for the two coaches would show a combined record of 86-4-2. Is
> it any wonder Coach Hobe Hooser and Coach Paul Quinn are considered two of the most successful
coaches CHS has ever had!
‘ 1970: THE FIRST BLACK TIGERS ... The first black coach to join the CHS Tigers
, football coaching staff was receivers’ Coach Glynn Presley. The first black cheerleaders were Mary
> Mosely and Jeanette Davis. Running back John Jackson was the first black player to score a
> touchdown for CHS - a 24 yard carry against Orange Park. Alton Denson became the first black
athlete to receive a top award at a Tiger football banquet when he won the “Best Defensive Back”
!)
trophy. Other black athletes on the 1970 football team were Keith Bell, Gerald Demps, Merrill Cray,
. Dekovan Levy, James Peterson, L. J. Campbell, Willie Jemigan (who scored the second TD by a
