Local realtor and former CHS band director Lenvil Dicks once played for the Dallas
Symphony Orchestra and last week was officially named “Honorary CHS Band Director” for his
long-time work as a CHS band booster.
Thedis Jones, long-time daycare center owner, was a number four engine mechanic on B-17
Flying Fortress bombers during World War IL
Wilbur Ives was the contractor who built Memorial Stadium back in 1949. Wilbur’s son,
Tommy Ives (CHS, 1950), played in the first game after the stadium was completed and captained
the Tigers to a 7-0 win over Leon High.
Columbia County School Superintendent Buford Galloway formally dedicated the LCCC
campus back in 1962 with these words, “We dedicate these buildings to the service in the training
of young and older students so that they might better serve their families, their nation, and their
God.”
The late Miller Brooks used to be seen all around town, always wearing several layers of
clothing, even in summer. One day, all the extra clothing saved his life. He stumbled and fell
beneath a moving train and the entire train passed over him but he was unhurt, thanks to all the
padding.
