They Made Sure the Game Wasn t
a Killer Sport
October 26,1993
Football a killer sport?.. .’’Football is regarded as a legalized form of fighting in which the
men of the opposing teams each try to maim, cripple, blind, or kill as many of his combatants as
possible.”
This statement was the attitude of those opposing the first football team at Lake City’s
Florida Agricultural College in 1901. To counter this fear, the college added an unusual “coach” to
the team to insure that the game did not become a “killer sport” - Minister of the Gospel, Reverend
Mr. Tims of the Lake City Presbyterian Church.
Boosting our teacher and kids •.. The Columbia Public Schools Foundation boosts local
teachers and kids, K-12. It funds teachers who try innovative projects (103 in three years); co
sponsor the Teachers of the Year and non-instructional Employees of the Year; sponsor “Think
Sharp” on LCCC-TV, the Math Bee, the History Fair; and lots more. You can boost the foundation
that boosts our teacher and kids by attending their annual dinner on Tuesday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. at the
Lake City Holiday Inn. Tickets are $10 at the Chamber of Commerce or call 755-8183.
A class act... We knew our Friday pre-game program might run a few minutes past 7:30
p.m. kickoff time so we called Ron Allen at the Florida High School Activities Association to
discuss it. Ron graciously checked the FHSAA rules, then called St. Augustine school
administrators and the official’s association, then called us back with this message: “We all join
together in wishing CHS a great Homecoming. We all send our best wishes and offer our full
cooperation in giving you the extra time you need.” Thank you, Ron, and all others who helped!
Tigers helping Tigers . . . Tiger senior linebacker Kaylin Jackson blocked two punts,
returned one for a touchdown, and helped lead CHS past St. Augustine 42-6 in the key district 2-5A
win last Friday night. But there’s more to the story. At halftime, Kaylin learned that his mother had
been injured in a car accident and had been hospitalized with head injuries. The teenager knew he
had to go to his mother, but that would mean missing the rest of his final homecoming game at CHS.
