Vera Kilgore Heilig: Her Poetry Lives (2017) H. Morris Williams, Marie Law Haire
Ambivalence
Seeing the young go streaming by
I feel a strange desire to cry.
I do not know, to tell the truth,
If it is for my own lost youth
Or for the young themselves I sigh.
I am not sure, I say, if I
Feel envious or compassionate
As youth goes rushing by my gate.
Niggard

To one I knew was thirsty — but, oh shame!
I held my crystal and good china back,
And gave it in a cup that had a crack.
