Vera Kilgore Heilig: Her Poetry Lives (2017) H. Morris Williams, Marie Law Haire
Cocoon
Wrapped in a soft cocoon of warm blankets
I shut the world of facts and figures out.
Cocoon? Not really.
I will not emerge to float on velvet wing
And sip the nectar from exotic flowers.
I will creep out, the same dull grub
And inch along the branch
Gnawing the leaves.
New Baby
Small red and wrinkled mass of wrath,
Indignant now to find you have been hurled
From soft security into an alien world,
Subdue your fury. Rest assured your path
Is guarded now by her who held you curled
contented in that warm safe other world.
Know too, the hand that soothes you now
Will hold you steady till your stumbling feet
Have learned to walk unfaltering, and beat
Their own path through the world, will teach you how
to scale the obstacles that you will meet.
Curb now your infant ire, for life is sweet.
