Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy

                                                                        Chapter Twenty: 2000 - 2009

                                                   Lake City Community College

The women’s softball team at the community college had a
national championship in 2001 in women’s Division-1 softball.
However, it would be the last such championship because in 2008
President Charles Hall announced that at the end of the 2007-2008
school year, it would disband its intercollegiate athletic program because
of the expected reductions in state funding, lower student enrollment,
the costs of maintaining an athletic dormitory, and food costs. Also of
concern to LCCC was the cutback by the Florida Department of
Corrections, which withdrew its training courses. The school thus joined
Edison Community College in Fort Myers, Florida Keys Community
College in the Keys, and Valencia Community College in Orlando as
the only Florida community colleges without an intercollegiate sports
program. In 2008, the school also closed Granger Hall, the 84-student
residence hall used mostly for students on athletic scholarship at LCCC.
