Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy
Chapter Twenty: 2000 - 2009
The dawn of a new century presented its own challenges to
Lake City, including budget problems and managing new growth. The
city had a population of 9,980 in the 2000 census.
Lake City Municipal Airport
The Lake City Municipal Airport continues to serve the area.
Officially the airport is classified
as a General Aviation facility, but
it also has two on-site operations
that most other airports do not
have: TIMCO is an operation for
modifying and rehabilitating
civilian and military aircraft like
the B – 727 and B – 737.
TIMCO is the third largest
employer in Lake City with over
600 employees. Also the U.S.
Forest Service has C-130 transport aircraft there in support of its
forest-fire-fighting operations in the southeastern United States.
Historical Museum
The Lake City - Columbia County Historical Museum continues
to preserve and exhibit documents and artifacts from the past.
