Lake City, Florida: A Sesquicentennial Tribute (2009) H. Morris Williams, Dr. Kevin M. McCarthy
Chapter Twenty: 2000 - 2009
County Commissioner Ron Williams is the only person to
serve as Commanding General of the Blue-Grey Army at the Olustee
Festival and Battle Re-enactment four times—1986, 1989, 2002,
and 2003.
Lake Citian Jim Wilson has the unusual distinction of being
named the District Teacher of the Year in both Columbia (2005) and
Suwannee (2007) counties. He also taught the first advanced place-
ment calculus classes at both Fort White High School and Branford
High School.
National Guard
In 2005, the local 153rd National Guard Engineer Unit in
Lake City was activated, sent for training to Camp Shelby in
Mississippi, and deployed for a year to Afghanistan to help in the war
effort there. When it returned from that duty, it was reassigned as the
Alpha Company, 53rd Special Troops Battalion, headquartered in
Pinellas Park, Florida, but with the Engineer Unit stationed in Lake
City.
Time Capsule
In 2009, when
officials began looking for the
time capsule that had been
put away in 1959, James
Montgomery (see p. 217)
remembered where it was
and led city officials to it.
