Elks Lodge

The plaque in front of the Elks Lodge 893 at 259 NE Hernando
th
reads “1904-2004. 100 year anniversary. Dedicated on January 20,
2004 by Roy Markham, PDDGER.” This plaque tells us our Elks
Lodge was founded just one year after the Wright Brothers’ historic
flight at Kitty Hawk.

City officials

The county superintendents of public instruction were Michael
Flanagan (1996 - 2004), Grady D. (Sam) Markham (2004 -
2008), and Michael F. Millikin (2008 - ).

The police chiefs this decade were David W. Albritton (1997
- 2008), Bruce Charles (interim chief),
Steven Burch (2009), Gary Laxton (interim chief - 2009), Carlton
Tunsil (interim chief), Argatha Gilmore (2009 - ).

Lake City mayors this decade include Ray Kirkland (mayor
1996 - 2005), George R. Ward (mayor in 2005 after Ray Kirkland
resigned), and Stephen M. Witt (mayor 2005 - ).

The Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center has
continued to serve many people in and around Lake City.
