Kindergarten Dream.. .Years ago, before our Kindergarten Center was built, Principal Earl
Watts knew exactly the building layout he had in mind, “I want the children to see squirrels, to hear

mockingbirds, to smell pine trees. To beat a little drum, to find a worm living under their log seat.
To learn about their environment by using all their senses in a beautiful setting and to learn to

conserve natural resources.” The school was then built to accomplish these objectives. How
successful was he? One year later, the Florida Chapter of The Conservation Society of America

awarded the school its “Outstanding Environmental Conservation Award”.
Melrose Park Elementary School. . .Does anybody out there know where the name

“Melrose Park” came from? Was there ever such a park? Was there a family named Melrose? If
              you can help, call 755-8183.

                                       Class Down to Just Two

And now there are two_______ A. K. Black and Gertrude Peterson are the only two remaining
members of the CHS class of 1921. Both still live in Lake City and both were members of the

yearbook staff that produced the first-ever CHS yearbook, called the “Homerun.” A. K. was the
editor of that first yearbook and recently donated his valuable “first edition” copy to our school

museum in honor of his wife, Lassie, and his children, Carolyn, Nettie and Edna.
Another “Blue Horse” Bike Winner . . . last week this column told you about Ernest

Williams (CHS, 1940) who won a Blue Horse bicycle during his high school days and asked if there
were others. Ed Montgomery called to say he also won one, “I collected and sent in about 2,300

coupons and won the first prize, a Blue Horse bike. That bike was so sturdy, almost indestructible.
I rode it, then passed it on to by brother, David, who rode it. Then he gave it to our brother, James,

who rode it a long time. We never wore it out. We probably just gave it away when we moved the
manse out south of town and couldn’t take everything. It was just a great bicycle.” Are there any
              others?
